We are promoting efforts to help with accessing these resources.Just this week alone, a new tax credit program was announced to support businesses to offset the cost for employers to provide full pay when their employees get a COVID-19 vaccination or recover from that vaccination side effect. It was created to help restaurants and bars devasted by the pandemic. Once the fund application is released, the first 21 days will prioritize applications from small business owned by women, economically disadvantage individuals, and veteran owned restaurants. Keep watching our site and we will post more details on this critical recovery fund.It should not have taken a pandemic to bring to the forefront, the disparity ratio of Latino, low-income and black business who historically have less operating capital than most white owned business. Where is the business located? What phone and email to contact, and during which hours? These are the things customers want to know, and putting the information out there is completely free.<\/p>\n<p>Even businesses who are confident about their online presence should revisit their listings from time to time to ensure the information clients receive is accurate.<\/p>\n<p>Getting Started<\/p>\n<p>At minimum, owners should ensure their businesses are listed on both Google and Facebook. Not only are these sites incredibly popular, but other websites and applications use this data to provide their own results.<\/p>\n<p>For Google: https:\/\/www.google.com\/intl\/en_us\/business\/<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s simple and fast to create or update your Google Business listing, adding your contact info and hours of operation. You can add photos, information about your goods and services, and see analytics data about how people find your business. Best of all, the information will automatically deploy to the widely used Google Maps.<\/p>\n<p>For Facebook: https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business<\/p>\n<p>Setting up a page on Facebook can be a longer process, as the platform emphasizes customer engagement. Many businesses use Facebook to communicate directly with clients. Some even use it for bookings, or use Facebook as their primary web portal, but even a minimal listing can have big impact.<\/p>\n<p>Google is the largest web search engine, but its competitors use Facebook as a source of business information. Moreover, customers are likely to be Facebook users themselves. Make it easy for your clients to share their good opinions of your business with their friends.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these platforms are ultimately powered by ad revenue, but you don\u2019t need to buy ads to use and benefit from these services.<\/p>\n<p>Setting up online listings is the easiest way to boost the profile of your small business, but maybe you don\u2019t know how to get started using the internet. The past couple months, we have been preparing for their arrival by transforming a small section of previously-litter-filled land beside our building into a pollinator garden filled with bees\u2019 and butterflies\u2019 favorite wildflowers.<\/p>\n<p>While the beehives will be housed outside HEDC, the bees will benefit the entirety of the Westside. Bees support the growth of trees, flowers, and the food we eat through pollination; a world without bees would be a world without all of these. Unfortunately, bees are endangered due to climate change, habitat loss, pesticides, diseases, and invasive species. Since our community is in a rather urban area, it is crucial that we provide spaces where bees can stop to rest and collect pollen and nectar to feed their colonies. You can also help take care of these bees who provide so much beauty and nourishment for us by building bee nests and planting bee-friendly flowers and not using any pesticides on them.<\/p>\n<p>HEDC\u2019s pollinator garden is just starting to sprout so stop by to see the progress! This past pandemic year gave HEDC as an organization, along with its staff, the opportunity to serve more than 3000 individuals from 600 households in 7 states across the country. We cannot help but see the silver lining in these \u201cchallenging and unprecedented times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We have never had more community volunteers, nor opportunities for volunteerism than we\u2019ve had in the past year. With the need for coordination and communication so great, we\u2019ve never been more connected with our fellow community organizations in the Westside and Northeast. Reaching so many new people, we\u2019ve never had a more diverse constituency. We seldom get to touch as many lives as we have this year, and we\u2019re incredibly proud of the impact we\u2019ve had.<\/p>\n<p><em>Who we serve:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most of HEDC\u2019s extra outreach this year was conducted under the dictum of minimal data collection. With the commodification of personal data at an all-time high, HEDC remains absolutely committed to protecting our clients\u2019 information and privacy. We make it easy on ourselves by simply not collecting<\/p>\n<p>more information than is necessary to provide services, and to demonstrate to our grantors that the people we profess to have helped are real people in our community.<\/p>\n<p>All that said, it\u2019s always fun to take a quick look at our clients\u2019 demographic data. People living in the city&#8217;s predominantly Hispanic Westside have seen businesses move in, leading to fears of change pushing longtime residents out. Proof of that pride can be found on her calf, where she has a tattoo featuring a red, white, and blue barber\u2019s pole laid over an open pair of scissors.<\/p>\n<p>Still, after more than two decades in the industry, Tamayo has decided to hang up her shears. She\u2019s closing up her shop for good on Sunday, November 20, and will be moving to Sarasota, Florida shortly thereafter to live closer to family.
